Milton, On: The Young Leaders Group (YLG) of the Private Motor Truck Council of Canada (PMTC) held their annual Christmas breakfast and general meeting on December 18^th, hosted by Sharp Transportation in Cambridge, On.

The meeting was attended by 16 people, mostly YLG members, with some PMTC board members and staff also in attendance. The purpose of the meeting was to provide a review of the YLG’s activities in 2018, provide the members with a YLG update, and to have an open forum to discuss 2019 activities, future and initiatives that the Young Leaders would like to see.

Several great ideas were raised by the Young Leaders in attendance, such as developing tools they could use to promote the Industry with in their communities. A brainstorming session with Young Leaders group members will be planned for 2019, where YLG members will discuss and put forth idea’s for tools and resources that the PMTC could develop to arm our YLG members to help them promote the industry at schools, career fairs, employments centers and other community events.

“Traditional ideas have not worked”, said PMTC President Mike Millian. “In order to attract the Youth to our Industry, we need to listen to their idea’s and promote with-in their channels”. YLG Members will be contacted in the New Year with more details for a future meeting.

Once the business portion of the meeting was over, those in attendance were treated to a “Career Story”. Kimberly Biback, PMTC Board Member, and Business Analyst for Sharp Transportation, moderated a no holds barred discussion with Shari Lagala, PMTC 1^st Vice Chair, and Health, Safety & Training Manager for Patene Building Supplies. Shari discussed her beginnings in the industry, her challenges coming up in a male dominated industry over 25 years ago, and what has helped her become a success in this industry. In was an enlightening story which provided valuable tips and insights for all in attendance.

Another success of this meeting was a charity portion. Those who attended were asked to donate a perishable food item or cash to the Cambridge self help Food bank. Shawn Baird donated a diecast truck to be presented to the individual who donated the most to the cause. Together, the 16 individuals and the YLG raised $800.00 cash, and hundreds of pounds of food items to help provide a meal to those in need at this special time of year. Kelly Perez of Zavcor was the winner of the truck, in a tight contest!

“The enthusiasm of the YLG Members is amazing, and the charitable portion of this event is another example of that”, said PMTC YLG Chairperson Matt Richardson. “Over the last 2 years this group has shown amazing strides, and our YLG membership has nearly doubled since 2016.”
