Maintaining vision in darkness

March 19, 2020

Your mind can either be your darkest prison or your greatest asset. This remains our choice.

2020 is synonymous with eyesight. At the moment we can’t see where all this - COVID19 crisis - is going or how it will end, but it does not mean we are blinded to vision. Our foresight is embedded in the course of our daily focus and actions in the present. You can use a magnifying glass to focus on magnifying an image or to start a fire. How will you focus yours? If we focus on magnifying the solution, it will bring greater clarity on how we can overcome this together. This is a crash course on global resilience.

It can be easy to get caught up in the panic and fear of the uncertain. I will not minimize the devastation; for many businesses and entrepreneurs this is a heavy blow. But in saying this, there is also a sense of solidarity, knowing that on a global scale we are in this together. Plan and prepare, but don’t panic. Accept the current circumstances as a short term sacrifice for long term sustainability.

 A few pointers;

  • When it gets overwhelming, turn it off. Watching the constant barrage of updates that flow in every minute will not change your level of control over the situation. Go outside, close your eyes and listen to the sound of life all around you. Spring is on the horizon and nature is beaming and lively, unaware of our current crisis and concerns. Take time to join in.
  • In this time of isolation, stay connected. Check in with relatives, friends and colleagues. Having a sense of connectivity can curb the feelings of isolation. It also helps others around you feel less alone
  • Help others. Let people know you are there for them (from a safe distance of course). There are so many ways to help. Be an ear, spread the humour, offer to leave supplies outside your door for others (if you have enough and someone is in need). Continue to explore this question with one another, how can we help each other the most?
  • Be grateful. There is nothing more fulfilling than an attitude of appreciation. The easiest way to develop this is to realize what you have. Make time to consciously think of it throughout the day.
  • Stay Active. This is medicine for the mind and soul. Activity boosts endorphins, stimulates blood flow and circulation and considerably impacts mindset and well-being. Being active does not require a set of rules. It does not require a regimented agenda, formal equipment or reps. Just move the body. Dance with your kids, play a game of Twister, go for a walk or hike. If you are watching Netflix, jog on the spot, practice squats, pushups, sit-ups, jumping jacks. Practice holding weights above your head or doing curls. If you don’t have weights or dumbbells, there are many household items you can use instead. If you have more energy and feel emotionally rejuvenated, you’re doing it right!

It was once said, "This is one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind". Once again, we are taking this leap together.
